THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE VOLUNTEERING AWARD
A special award has been introduced this year in addition to The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee. As with the Diamond Jubilee, this award will be aimed at national charities rather than the small local volunteer groups recognised by QAVS. Some key details regarding the award are summarised below :
APPOINTMENT OF NEW DEPUTY LIEUTENANT
Lady Haughey CBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, was pleased to present Colonel Ted Shields MBE with his Deputy Lieutenant’s Commission at the Civic Centre in Motherwell on Friday 6 May.
Colonel Shields spent 36 years in the Regular Army and is now the Chief Executive of the Lowland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, a Government agency that supports and enables some 2,500 Reservists and 4,000 Cadets across the Lowlands of Scotland, many of whom are based in Lanarkshire. He also continues to serve in the Army Reserve. Colonel Shields served on operations in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. He also enjoyed tours of duty in Hong Kong, Canada, Cyprus, South Africa and Jordan. He and his family have had their home in Clydesdale for 20 years.
Colonel Shields said, ‘It is a great honour to have been appointed to this role by Lady Haughey. I am really looking forward to assisting the Lord-Lieutenant and the Lieutenancy more generally in their duties, especially in this landmark year of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.’
Commemorative Blue Plaque unveiled for Lanarkshire war hero
On Saturday 7th May 2022, the Lord-Lieutenant was delighted to attend a special ceremony to honour WWII Royal Navy Submariner and Victoria Cross recipient Lieutenant Donald Cameron. Born in Carluke, Lieutenant Donald Cameron received the Victoria Cross medal for outstanding bravery during World War II. Continue reading →

HRH PRINCESS ROYAL VISIT TO SPRINGBANK PARK , EAST KILBRIDE
HRH Princess Royal visited the Gypsy and Traveller Site at Springbank Park , East Kilbride on Friday 11th March 2022.
Princess Anne was received by Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Gavin Whitefield CBE and introduced to South Lanarkshire Council Provost Ian McAllan , local MP Dr Lisa Cameron , Council Chief Executive Cleland Sneddon and Housing Director , Daniel Low . Area Housing Manager Sharon Egan along with the Travelling Site Officer John Irvine then took the Princess on a walking tour of the site during which she was introduced to the contractors and project team involved in the award winning recent improvement works at the development .
HRH visited an amenity unit and the chalet of the longest staying resident and talked to a number of residents who spoke about their pride in the development and their positive engagement with the local community . Before leaving the Princess Royal was presented with a posy of flowers by the youngest resident on the site .
