Many congratulations to Mrs Susan McAleer from Uddingston who recently celebrated her 100th Birthday .
Deputy Lieutenant Mary Hernon DL visited Mrs McAleer , passing on congratulations from Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Lady Haughey CBE, whilst Provost Margaret Cooper presented flowers and a framed certificate on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council
Susan was born and grew up in the east end of Glasgow. She worked as a machinist in a clothing factory and, in 1949, she married James.
In any spare time that she managed to have, her greatest hobby was dancing, while she also loved the cinema, going to watch a film twice a week for many years.
She was widowed early and she moved to Uddingston to be close to her children, Catherine and William. Susan was joined on her big day by her grandchildren, Lauren & Paul and her great-grandchildren, Orla, Caoimhe, Marcella, Saoirse and Rebecca.
Provost Cooper said: “For anyone to reach one hundred years of age is a remarkable thing in itself, but to do so and retain the sparkle, cheer and kindness that Susan has is truly amazing.
“She lit up the room with her smile and the twinkle in her eye and she gave us all a laugh with her perfectly-timed comments, and it was a privilege and an inspiration to spend time with her. She certainly is a Supergran and I wish Susan many happy returns and all the very best for the future.”
Deputy Lord Lieutenant Hernon added: “It was an honour and privilege not only to represent the Lord Lieutenant’s Office on the occasion of Susan’s 100th birthday, but I was also delighted to share in her special day as a long-time friend of Susan and her family – a family who are very highly thought-of within the local community .
