Lord Lieutenant Lady Haughey CBE attended a ceremony at which
a special flag was raised outside the North Lanarkshire Council headquarters ahead of Armed Forces Day./
The event hosted by Provost Jean Jones of North Lanarkshire Council was also attended by Provost Ian McAllan of South Lanarkshire Council along with veterans, military personnel, members of the emergency services and local people in Motherwell on Monday 25 June.
Armed Forces Day aims to increase public support and awareness about the contribution made on behalf of the nation by the Armed Forces. Special events were held throughout the UK on Saturday 30th June to allow local communities to recognise the challenges faced by British service personnel and to show sincere appreciation for the selfless sacrifice and dedication given by our service personnel both past and present for their country.
Provost Jean Jones said: “This year we commemorate a century since the end of the Great War so this year’s ‘Fly the Flag’ ceremony carries added significance. The veterans’ associations do a fantastic job to support events like today and I would like extend my thanks for all their efforts. This occasion is marked right across the country and we are pleased to play our part here in North Lanarkshire.”
