On Saturday 13th July 2024 a special ceremony was held at Strathclyde Park at which the “Freedom of North Lanarkshire ” was granted to The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) by North Lanarkshire Council .
The commemoration ceremony was hosted by Provost Kenneth Duffy and Lady Susan Haughey CBE, Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire and recognised the dedicated service of both current and former members of the regiment . The award being given in thankful acknowledgement of the service and sacrifice by those who have served in The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) together with those who served in the regiments that constituted it .The accolade is the highest honour that the Council can offer and also celebrates the bond between the regiment and the people of North Lanarkshire .
The historical links between North L anarkshire and the regiment can be traced back to 1678 through the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
The Royal Scots Fusiliers traditionally recruited from the area of North Lanarkshire and continued to do so upon their amalgamation with the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow regiment) to form the Royal Highland Fusiliers.
