CALDERGLEN HIGH SCHOOL BEFRIENDING GROUP

A special  lunch was provided for members of Calderglen High School Befriending Group on Wednesday 19th June 2024 . Lanarkshire Lieutenancy was represented by Deputy Lieutenant Dr Morrison Young  DL.
The group has been serving the local community for the past 15 years with local resident Avril Anderson the key driving force of the group. Sixth year pupils use part of their non teaching time to visit and support local residents- a service greatly appreciated by the community and the pupils. In addition pupils also support the local church food bank by serving as helpers.
The Head Teacher Mrs White thanked those who had attended and rightly complimented the pupils and staff for their input throughout the year as well as during the lunch.
Dr Young commented “This is a fantastic initiative and one making a real difference to the lives of many local residents. I was made extremely welcome and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the project. We enjoyed an excellent lunch produced by pupils and staff of Calderglen High.”

STRATHAVEN MINIATURE RAILWAY

 Deputy  Lieutenant David Russell DL  joined the Provost of South Lanarkshire Council  , Councillor Margaret Cooper, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Strathaven Miniature Railway and the 50th of the Strathaven Model Society on Saturday 22nd June 2024 .
It was also a  charity day with all monies being donated to the Kilbride Hospice in East Kilbride, the nominated charity of the  Provost and local councillor  Margaret Cooper.
Just over £600 was raised on the day and will be presented to the Hospice  later this year.
A big thank you to the  volunteers who operated the railway on the day and collected this fantastic amount .

LANDEMER DAY 2024

The Lanarkshire Lieutenancy was delighted to be represented at the 50th Anniversary of the re-introduction of  the  Landemer Day celebrations  in Rutherglen on Saturday 8th June 2024.

Deputy Lieutenant Mary Hernon MBE DL attended along with the Provost of South Lanarkshire Council , Councillor Margaret Cooper  at what was a very successful , enjoyable and well attended event .

ARMED FORCES UPDATE

D-Day 80. Commemoration of the  80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on 6th June 1944  is now underway with a series of major commemorations and events across the UK and in France.   Information on D-Day 80 can be found here: D-Day 80 – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

Armed Forces Day.  Armed Forces Day this year falls on Saturday 29 June.  It is a chance for the Nation to show its support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community (including Service families, veterans, and cadets).  Details can be found at : Armed Forces Day – 29 June 2024.  Shortly after   Armed Forces Day  a parade by the Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) will take place  in Strathclyde Country Park  on Saturday 13th July 2024  to mark the freedom of North Lanarkshire being granted to the Regiment. More details regarding times etc will be advised in due course  .

The Armed Forces in Lanarkshire.  Lanarkshire has a rich history of support to the Armed Forces both through the two World Wars and since.

There are currently 5 units of the Army Reserve on 4 sites in Lanarkshire:

 

·       124 Field Squadron (Air Support) of 71 Engineer Regiment, Cumbernauld. Elements of 71 Engineer Regiment are currently deployed with UN Forces in Cyprus.

·       C Company of 6th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, Motherwell

·       221 (Glasgow) Transport Squadron of 154 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, Carmyle (Cambuslang)

·       153 Recovery Company of 102 Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, East Kilbride

·       852 (Lowland) Signal Troop of 32 Signal Regiment, East Kilbride

 

There are no units of the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marine Reserves or RAF Reserves.

 

There are 24 units of the Cadets (Sea Cadets, Army Cadet Force (ACF), and the RAF Air Cadets (RAFAC)) in Lanarkshire:

 

·       Sea Cadets: Airdrie and East Kilbride

·       Army Cadet Force: HQ of the Glasgow & Lanarkshire Battalion Army Cadet Force in Cambuslang; with detachments in East Kilbride x 2; Strathaven; Motherwell; Newmains; Bellshill; Hamilton; Coalburn; Lanark; Larkhall; Cambuslang; Airdrie & Coatbridge; Kilsyth; Cumbernauld

·       RAF Air Cadets: Wing Activity Centre in Cambuslang; with detachments in Cambuslang; East Kilbride; Hamilton; Lanark; Monklands; Motherwell.
