The ninth  public speaking competition for schools in Lanarkshire, organised by the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy,   was held on 23rd October 2024   at the  Rutherglen Town  Hall    with the following schools taking part:

Hamilton College  School

St Aiden’s  High School

St Maurice’s High School

Uddingston Grammar School

DIAMOND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Many congratulations to Harry and Christine Cowan from Moodiesburn who recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary .

Deputy Lieutenant Derrick  Hannan DL visited the happy couple , passing on congratulations from Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Lady Haughey CBE whilst Depute Provost Bob Burgess  presented flowers on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council .

Harry is a retired engineer and Christine , a retired psychiatric nurse and the couple have just returned from a family holiday one of many spent over the years .

THE KING’S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE 2025

The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2025  King’s Award for Voluntary Service  (KAVS) is  approaching .

The award is the highest given to volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities . Created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and previously known as The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS), the Award has been shining a light on the fantastic work of voluntary groups from all across the UK for many years.

Equivalent to an MBE, KAVS is the highest Award given to local voluntary groups in the UK, and they are awarded for life.

Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire , Lady Haughey CBE  wishes to see  groups in Lanarkshire   recognised “ I am very much aware of the many groups in the County where so many volunteers give freely of their talents and time for the benefit of others . I would encourage anyone who is aware of a group providing exceptional  service in their area to consider nominating them for an award .”

Further  details of the awards scheme and the nomination process are available from the KAVS website at https://kavs.dcms.gov.uk . Nominations for the 2025  awards require to be submitted online by  1st December 2024.

Every month the Lieutenancy attends Citizenship Ceremonies in North and South Lanarkshire Council .

Earlier in October the ceremony to welcome new citizens to South Lanarkshire hosted by Depute Provost , Councillor Bert Thomson was attended by Deputy Lieutenant Mary Hernon MBE DL .

GIRLS’ BRIGADE QUEEN’S AWARD PRESENTATION

GIRLS’ BRIGADE QUEEN’S AWARD PRESENTATION

On behalf of Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Haughey CBE, Deputy Lieutenant Alastair Peat DL attended the Annual Dedication Service of 4th Coatbridge Girls’ Brigade Company in Middle Church, Coatbridge on Sunday 6th October 2024 and was privileged to present the Queen’s Award to two long-serving members of the Company.

Sophie Duncan and Hannah Watt joined the Company at the age of five, and have worked their way through all sections before going on to gain this highest award in Girls’ Brigade.

During the service, both girls were given the opportunity to describe the various activities they had undertaken to meet the requirements of the Award, personally, within the Company and also the wider community, and this highlighted exceptional levels of effort and commitment over the last two years. Both girls also acknowledged the support they had received from the officers in the Company, as well as parents and family.

The attached photo, taken after the presentation of their Awards, includes Linda O’Rourke (Company Captain), Hannah Watt, Alastair Peat DL, Sophie Duncan and Marjorie McIntosh (Queen’s Award Advisor ).

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ST VINCENT’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

 Deputy Lieutenant Mary Hernon MBE DL attended a special mass on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant on Wednesday 25 September 2024 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of St Vincent’s Primary School in East Kilbride.
The Mass was held in St Vincent’s Chapel and was concelebrated by Bishop Toal along with 3 other priests and 2 Deacons.
