On Wednesday, 19th August, the Lord-Lieutenant Lady Haughey CBE attended a special event celebrating the 900th anniversary of the Royal Burgh of Rutherglen.
‘A Royal Burgh in Felt and Stitch’ is a handcrafted commemorative banner to mark the 900th anniversary of Rutherglen being granted Royal Burgh status by King David I. This special textile was collaboratively created by pupils from Burgh Primary, Cairns Primary and Spittal Primary, as well as volunteers from the local community. The project was delivered in collaboration between South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and Clyde Gateway.
The felted banner, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, tells the story of Rutherglen’s rich heritage through a series of stitched scenes that illustrate the people, places, and stories of Rutherglen from its earliest days to the present. Representatives from the French Consulate were also in attendance, in recognition and celebration of the French cultural influence on the project.
