The eleventh public speaking competition for schools in Lanarkshire, organised by the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy, was held on 20th May 2026 at the Airdrie Town Hall with the following schools taking part:
Biggar High School
Caldervale High School
St Andrew’s High School
St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School
Three pupils from each team spoke on the subject of ” Citizenship in our Schools and Community ” and then answered questions posed by two pupils from another team .
The judging panel was chaired by Bernard Ponsonby and also included , Professor Anne Hendry , Stephen Hawthorne and Tony Carlin .
The standards achieved by all schools taking part in the public speaking competition were again exceptional focussing on the importance of citizenship and the benefits of immigration to the country . Winners of the trophy, presented by Lord Lieutenant Lady Haughey CBE were the St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School team .
Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey CBE said: “All four schools were excellent, providing a tremendous showcase of the intelligence, passion and civic pride of our young people in Lanarkshire. My warm congratulations to St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School and all participating schools for their inspiring contributions. Thanks are due to retired Deputy Lieutenant Derrick Hannan , who did magnificent job as Master of Ceremonies and also to organiser of the competition Andy Braidwood DL .”
Now in its eleventh year, the event continues to grow in impact and ambition, helping pupils build confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of their role as future community leaders. Well done to everyone involved.
