10TH PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

The tenth   public speaking competition for schools in Lanarkshire, organised by the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy,   was held on 15th May 2025   at the  Airdrie Town Hall     with the following schools taking part:

Brannock High   School

Lanark Grammar  School

Larkhall Academy

Our Lady’s High School  Cumbernauld

 

Three pupils from each team   spoke on the subject of ” Citizenship  in our Schools and Community ” and then answered questions posed by two pupils from another team .

The judging panel was chaired by  Retired Deputy Lieutenant and former Senior Police Officer  John McKenzie DL     and also included :

George Thorley OBE Retired CEO at South Ayrshire Council    ;

Andrew MacFarlane   ACS Clothing Limited ; and

Louis Munn Retired DL and former Chief Superintendent with Strathclyde Police   .

The competition was opened and closed by an excellent musical program from Brannock High School which was enjoyed very much by everyone in attendance .

The standards  achieved by all schools taking part in the public speaking competition  were again   exceptional focussing on the importance of citizenship and the benefits of immigration to the country .  Winners of the trophy, presented by Lord Lieutenant Lady Haughey CBE were the Larkhall Academy  team of :

Brooke Stevely

Niamh Thomson

Ava Dalziel

Lucas  Hynd

and Kohl Logan  ; along with teachers Darcy Fitzpatrick , Mairead Hill ,Aoife Taylor  and Deputy Lieutenant Dr William Morrison  Young DL  who mentored the team.

Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey  CBE   said: “This competition is a wonderful showcase of the intelligence, passion and civic pride of our young people in Lanarkshire. My warm congratulations to Larkhall Academy and all participating schools for their inspiring contributions.”

Now in its tenth year, the event continues to grow in impact and ambition, helping pupils build confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of their role as future community leaders. Well done to everyone involved.
