The Royal Burgh of Lanark Community Council recently decided that a War Memorial Plaque should be placed on the outside of the Memorial Hall to tell visitors and residents that the hall , constructed in 1926, is the town’s official war memorial . Rather than a statue or cenotaph Lanark chose to build a hall as its tribute to those who lost their lives in World War One and in subsequent conflicts .
Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Gavin Whitefield CBE DL was very honoured to unveil the plaque at a special ceremony led by Community Council Chair Frank Gunning on Sunday 28th April 2019 and attended by Army cadets and members of the British Legion . A service of remembrance followed the unveiling which included readings from two Lanark Grammar School Captains , Erin Gilchrist and Emily Hamilton , a speech by South Lanarkshire Council Deputy Provost Collette Stevenson and prayers and readings from the local clergy . The choir of St Mary’s and the Salvation Army also took part in what was a very moving service .
